Stephen P. Weldon, editor of the Isis Bibliography has made the following request: I would like to ask you to take a short survey about how you use the bibliography and other reference tools in your research with a special focus on social media. The purpose of this questionnaire is to help my research team design a new set of networking tools for research in the history of science and technology. I am working with a group of scholars, librarians, and technical experts on this project, and together we are exploring the possibilities for research that the digital environment has created. Your participation in this survey will help us better understand people’s current research practices so that we will know what to focus on as we rethink the bibliography for the twenty-first century. You can access the questionnaire at the following address: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/7H3XD63. The survey will be accessible until Friday, 15 March. It should take you only about 10 minutes. I would greatly appreciate your help with this project.

For several years the International Committee for the History of Technology (ICOHTEC) has managed an active policy to encourage young scholars’ work and mobility through travel grants to its symoposia and the awarding of book and article prizes. Following this support of young scholars, one year ago, in February 2012, ICOHTEC launched the PhD Corner Project, which for the past year has contributed to the dialogue between ICOHTEC and the community of young scholars interested in developing experience in the fields of the History of Technology and the Environment. The aim of this initiative was the creation of a new page on the ICOHTEC website, an information platform that might assist in connecting young scholars to grant offers. In all countries there are universities, archives, libraries, museums, academies and foundations that periodically offer scholarships or travel grants to finance visiting scholars to visit and use their collections. Sometimes there is a tangible lack between offer and demand: graduate students and PhD candidates can find difficulties in finding the right opportunity because of the restricted visibility in the web of many grant offers. The PhD Corner page is placed in the Resources section of the ICOHTEC website: http://www.icohtec.org/resources-phd-corner.html Users will find a list of the countries in which grant offers are available: each advertisement is completed by name of the sponsoring institution, the scientific address of the grant/program proposal, the deadline for sending the required documents, the link to the official guidelines and contacts page, and the link to the application form or registration page. The PhD Corner is updated each month with new announcements. This guarantees the constant turnover of new offers, and the dismissal of those expired. The PhD Corner webpage in past months have advertized almost one hundred announcements of travel, short term, long term, doctoral and post doctoral grants supporting studies into a wide range of topics in the humanities. The most part of the grant proposed on the website concern Europe and North America, and some opportunities to study in Latin America, Asia and Africa, thereby promoting real international mobility. To continue in improving of this project we ask the cooperation of all ICOHTEC members: we are looking to collect information on any kind of grant, fellowship, travel assistance or other program for research or study offered by their national institution. Are especially invited colleagues from the South Hemisphere countries, Caucasus and Asia. Your contribution is allowing ICOHTEC to promote a wide range of proposals that are meeting the expectation of many young scholars interested in pursuing an international research experience. Members intentioned to contribute to this project are invited to send emails to PhD Corner coordinator, Francesco Gerali at f.gerali@igg.unam.mx, giving the link of the official web page in which the grant or other offering is published to the public. This initiative is an important added value to our web site and ICOHTEC mission. Sincere thanks to all the members who have contributed information to develop the PhD Corner along the past year, and to ones who are looking to collaborate in future.

In Spring 2010 the Women’s and Gender Studies Program at Virginia Tech hosted  an interdisciplinary conference entitled Gender, Bodies & Technology (GBT) that attracted international participation from over 120 scholars working in this exciting field of research from a wide range of disciplinary approaches. Feedback from the participants was overwhelmingly positive and requests to strengthen and build a network of scholars in this area were strongly articulated. We invite scholars whose work relates to the Gender, Bodies and Technology nexus to join our growing listserv.   Please visit our website which includes an archive of the 2010 conference: http://www.cpe.vt.edu/gbt/ We invite you to join the listserv which serves as a place to share about new works, publications and art exhibitions, as well as circulate relevant calls for papers and job postings. The list is also an opportunity to network with other scholars in this area of research and to build a sense of community among those of us that otherwise might not cross paths due to our own disciplinary locations. We are also in the process of drafting a call for papers for a 2012 conference, details of which will be forthcoming. Also, please feel free to forward this invitation and subscription instructions to folks (or other relevant listservs) that you know who might be interested in joining the list. To subscribe to the list:
  1. Access your e-mail.
  2. Address a new message to listserv@listserv.vt.edu.

<http://sitemaker.umich.edu/motorcityvoices/home> This interactive web exhibit sheds new light on an important chapter in Detroit history in the years following the uprising of 1967. Exhibit panels provide an overview of the political, social and economic landscape during a particularly vibrant and contentious period in Detroit’s history. Special focus is devoted to the Dodge Revolutionary Union Movement (DRUM) and the League of Revolutionary Black Workers. A highlight of the exhibit is a collection of oral history video clips. Visitors can select from over forty video segments of oral histories conducted with some of the leading participants in the Detroit's labor and community struggles around issues of racism, class division, de-industrialization and community development. The oral histories also link the history of segregation in the U.S. during World War II, the civil rights movement and the movement for social and economic justice in Detroit factories and neighborhoods in the 1960s and 1970s. The oral history portion of the project consists of videotaped interviews with key activists including: General Baker, founder and organizer of DRUM, Mike Hamlin, a founding member of the League of Revolutionary Black Workers, Marian Kramer, community organizer and civil rights activist, Grace Lee Boggs, community activist and educator, and Jim Jacobs, former SDS (Students for a Democratic Society) leader and adult education specialist. The exhibit was created by Professor Bruce Pietrykowski together with graduate students in the Master of Arts in Liberal Studies program and the University of Michigan-Dearborn Museum Studies internship program. In addition, Kae Halonen, Lecturer in History at UM-D, conducted the oral history interviews that were used in the exhibit. The exhibition has been made possible with grant support from the Michigan Humanities Council <http://www.michiganhumanities.org/>.
