The Mercurians, a Special Interest Group of the Society for the History of Technology (SHOT), is offering the Pam Laird Research Grant, US$1,000 to defray the cost of travel and housing to use a research collection. The Mercurians began meeting in 1986 for the purpose of generating networks between people who share work and interests in the history of communication technologies, defining the field broadly. Our activities include publishing a semi-annual newsletter, Antenna, meeting during annual SHOT conferences, organizing paper sessions for SHOT meetings, and pursuing contacts between meetings via our Google Groups list. The newsletter serves both as a clearing house for readers and an informal forum for their ideas. We have added this new initiative to encourage and reward high-caliber research in the history of communication technologies. One of the Mercurians’ missions is to encourage scholarship in the history of communication technologies. There is no travel grant program (either within or outside SHOT) that we are aware of dedicated to supporting scholarship on the history of communication technologies. While the history of communication technology literature is vast and always growing, the quality of the research effort or resulting publication too often falls short of scholarly expectations. In general, the travel grant is awarded in alternating years. We awarded two such travel grants during the 2011 SHOT annual meeting in Cleveland. The next grant (or grants) will be announced during the 2013 SHOT meeting in Portland, Maine. Eligibility: The grant is intended for and limited to junior scholars­ meaning either current graduate students or recent postgraduates (no more than three years beyond the terminal degree in their field). Requirements and Application: Only travel to an appropriate archival collection to carry out research on an aspect of the history of communication technology, broadly defined, will be supported. The archive can be open to the public, private, or even closed, provided that necessary permissions have been obtained from the archive. The committee charged with identifying a new executive secretary for the Society for the History of Technology has begun its work and seeks nominations of candidates interested in filling the post of secretary, as the term of current Secretary Bernie Carlson expires in December 2013. The new secretary will take office in January, 2014. The position involves serious responsibilities for the daily and routine management of the Society’s work, including planning and direction of the annual meeting, oversight of committees, and working with the officers and Executive Council on the future of SHOT. This is an opportunity to contribute substantially to our Society and to the wider discipline of the history of technology, STS and related fields. Few positions are more important to the society and the work requires good administrative skills. But the work also is enormously rewarding and brings rewarding contact with members of the Society around the globe. The search committee urges serious consideration of this call for applications by members of the Society. The term of the office is three years, beginning 1 January 2014 and can be extended an additional two years. Although this is a volunteer position, SHOT can provide substantial support, including paying for part-time secretarial assistance which is currently directed toward annual meeting planning. The Society for the History of Technology will hold its annual meeting in Portland, Maine, 10–13 October. The Program Committee invites paper and session proposals on any topic in the history of technology, broadly defined. The Committee welcomes proposals for individual papers or sessions from researchers at all levels (including graduate students, chaired professors, and independent scholars). It welcomes proposals from those new to SHOT, regardless of discipline, as well as those familiar with the field. Applicants are encouraged to propose sessions that include a diverse mix of participants: multinational origins, a mix of men and women, a balance of professional ranks (i.e., mixing graduate students and junior scholars with senior scholars), etc. Strong preference will be given to panels whose presenters have diverse institutional affiliations. For the 2013 meeting the Program Committee continues to welcome unconventional sessions; that is, session formats that diverge in useful ways from the typical three/four papers with comment. These might include round-table sessions, workshop-style sessions with papers that are pre-circulated electronically, or "author meets critics" sessions. We also welcome poster proposals for presentation in poster sessions. Proposals should include a one-page abstract (maximum 500 words) as well as a one-page CV with current contact information. Session proposals should additionally include a short (maximum 300 words) description of how individual papers contribute to the overall session theme and a one-page CV for the commentator and/or chair. To get things going again, we have adopted this “crowd sourcing” strategy to allow SHOT members to populate the database collectively. Stephen Weldon, the HSS bibliographer, has been single-handedly keeping the HSTM database populated over the last several years and will be sharing his software with us so we can manage the crucial technical steps of converting citations into electronic format.  Coverage in the history of technology will definitely improve with our active participation.

Are you going to keep asking for publication listings in the future?  How will we populate HSTM after this first effort.
The Executive Council will be considering this question and looking for input after we see how this trial run goes.  SHOT is very interested in making a decision that is sustainable over the long-term.  This is just a first step to get the ball rolling.
