A four-week institute for eighteen college and university teachers on American material culture, using nineteenth-century New York City as a case study. The director, a professor at the Bard College Graduate Center for Decorative Arts, Design History, and Material Culture (BGC), introduces higher education faculty members to central concepts in the history of material culture history, using New York City and its rich local and regional collections as a case study. Topics include the transition from craft to industry, space and place in the urban landscape, "high" and "low" culture, and approaches to the study of visual artifacts. Class, ethnic, and racial diversity are addressed throughout the program. Institute activities take place mornings and afternoons; each week includes seminars on the week's themes and readings, specialized sessions led by guest faculty, site visits to urban neighborhoods and important collections, workshops on digital methodologies for presenting historical artifacts, and time to work on teaching and research projects. The weekly segments are led by Catherine Whalen (BGC), Bernard Herman (American studies, The University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill), Katherine Grier (history and museum studies, University of Delaware), and Joshua Brown (history, City University of New York Graduate Center). Guest lecturers include Kenneth Ames (BGC), Ivan Gaskell (BGC), Amelia Peck (Metropolitian Musem of Art), Edward S. Cooke, Jr. (art history, Yale University), Deborah Schmidt-Bach (New-York Historical Society), John Tchen (history, New York University), and Diane Wall (anthropology, City College-City University of New York). The participants read important general works on American material culture, including Jules Prown, "Mind in Matter: An Introduction to Material Culture Theory and Method" (1982); James Deetz, In Small Things Forgotten: An Archaeology of Early American Life (1996); Bernard Herman, Townhouse: Architecture and Material Life in the Early American City, 1780-1830 (2005); J. Ritchie Garrison, "Material Cultures," in A Companion to American Cultural History (2008); and Dell Upton, Another City: Urban Life and Urban Spaces in the New American Republic (2008). They also read a variety of specific studies of material culture in New York. Site visits include the New-York Historical Society, the Yale University Art Gallery, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and locations in Lower Manhattan, including the Museum of the Chinese in America and the African Burial Ground. The participants have access to the BGC's library, digital media laboratory, and residence facility. Faculty: Kenneth L. Ames, Debra Schmidt Bach, Joshua Brown, Edward S. Cooke Jr., Cynthia Copeland, Katherine C. Grier, Bernard L. Objects matter. Material culture scholars use artifactual evidence such as consumer goods, architecture, clothing, landscape, decorative arts, and many other types of material. The Bard Graduate Center will host a four-week NEH Summer Institute on American Material Culture. The institute will focus on the material culture of nineteenth century and use New York as its case study because of its role as a national center for fashioning cultural commodities and promoting consumer tastes. We will study significant texts in the scholarship of material culture together as well as in tandem with visiting some of the wonderful collections in and around New York City for our hands-on work with artifacts. The city will be our laboratory to explore some of the important issues of broad impact that go well beyond New York. We welcome applications from faculty and others with some experience doing object-based work, as well as those who have never taught or studied material culture. Application materials and other information about content, stipends, housing, etc. is available at http://bgc.bard.edu/neh-institute. The deadline is 4 March 2013.

"Networks and Network Analysis for Humanities". Call for Applications. Applications are currently being accepted for an NEH Institute for Advanced Topics in the Digital Humanities at UCLA, 15-27 August, 2010. Applications must be submitted online no later than November 5, 2009. For more information, and for the online application, please visit http://www.ipam.ucla.edu/programs/hum2010 In recent years, attention has been drawn in both the academic and popular press to the ubiquity of networks in everyday life, from communications networks to investment networks to power transmission networks to social networks. As a result of this increasing awareness, the study of the different types of networks that link us together, and the analysis of the structure of those networks has risen to greater and greater prominence not only in the mathematical and social sciences but also in the Humanities. Despite this increasing awareness of the importance of networks for theoretical advances in the Humanities, there is a considerable gap between recognizing in the broadest strokes the existence of these complex, dynamic systems and the very hard work of the consistent application of rigorous theoretically sound methods to the study of networks. Computational tools for the discovery and analysis of networks offer the promise of bridging this gap; unfortunately, many of these tools are as complex to work with as the underlying data itself. A main goal of this institute is to teach Humanities scholars some of the most accessible of these techniques. In broadest terms, the topics to be addressed in the Institute are: (a) the science of networks and networks in Humanistic inquiry (b) preparing and cleaning Humanities data for network analysis (c) internal networks in Humanistic data: networks of characters, networks of texts, networks of language (d) external networks in Humanistic data: networks of influence, networks of production, networks of reception.

Designated a National Historic Landmark in 1986, the Intrepid was a mass-produced city at sea, one of 24 Essex-class aircraft carriers built during and just after World War II. During the early years of the Cold War, the Navy began modernizing its Essex-class carriers for the jet age. Frequent overhauls and refittings extended the Intrepid’s service through the Cold War, the space race, and the Vietnam War.  In 1974, the Intrepid was decommissioned and shortly thereafter, New York City developer and philanthropist Zachary Fisher spearheaded a campaign to save the ship and open it as a museum at Manhattan’s Pier 86.  This tour will examine the Intrepid’s long career in the Navy, highlighting key design features of the historic aircraft carrier.

Starting in October 2006, the Intrepid Museum embarked upon an unprecedented two-year restoration and renovation project.  The Intrepid went into dry-dock, where her hull was repaired and painted.  Perkins & Will/Eva Maddox Branded Environments worked with the museum’s exhibits department to create a world-class museum environment within the ship’s hangar deck.  Among the goals of the redesign was the creation a contemporary-looking insertion that would complement both the contemporary and historic features of the hangar deck.  Another objective was to develop a style guide so that future exhibits would have the look and feel of the hangar installation, creating a cohesive appearance that is unique to the Intrepid Museum yet akin to other major museums in New York and around the world. The Study Day will explore the ways in which Intrepid Museum’s redesign addresses these goals.

Why participate in an SAH study-day?  It’s simple.  These study-days offer:

·          Special access—SAH tours get to go behind-the-scenes, experiencing places and seeing things not available to the general public;

·          Exceptional scholarly expertise—SAH tours are led by experts in the field, scholars well-versed in the topic who typically share insights that have not yet been published; and

·          Unparalleled networking opportunities—SAH tours offer participants the chance to interact with other scholars in a venue that is informal, interactive, and intellectually engaging.

For more information, please follow this link: A Landmark at Sea: The Architecture and Design of the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum, or register now at: https://asoft130.securesites.net/secure/sah/index.php?src=forms&ref=SAH+Study+Day+-+Intrepid&id=SAH+Study+Day+-+Intrepid.

Taking place in France from Monday 14th of September, to Friday, 18th of September 2009, the program aims to provide doctoral students with an overview of relevant research results and of innovative tools and methodologies in the field of communication history. It is organised jointly by the Cité des Télécoms, Paris-Sorbonne University and Maastricht University. Students will spend the five days at the Cité des Télécoms in the northern part of Brittany (http://www.cite-telecoms.com/), and present and discuss their PhD research with leading international scholars in the field of media history and innovation studies. The conference will be held in English.

Because the program embraces a long-term perspective, we are interested in projects dealing with the history of electronic images in a broad sense of the term, including topics such as television, video, telecommunications, computers, electronic devices for professional and artistic uses, medical equipment, basic research etc. Each half-day session will be based on a keynote lecture by an invited scholar and then followed by student presentations and discussions of work in progress. Social events and visits will provide an opportunity to discover either the traditional or modern face of this high tech region of Brittany.

The academic organizers: Andreas Fickers (Univ Maastricht) and Pascal Griset (Univ Paris-Sorbonne) will be joined by Ib Bondebjerg (Univ de Copenhague), Patrice Flichy (Univ Marne la Vallée), Sonja de Leeuw (Univ d’Utrecht), James Schwoch (Northwestern University), and Isabelle Veyrat-Masson (CNRS- Paris). All local costs (accommodation and food) will be covered by the organizers, but participants are expected to pay their own travel to and from Lannion, the closest railway station linked to Paris by TGV. Participation will be limited to 15-20 PhD students. Those interested in attending the summer school should send the following documents by e-mail to the academic organizers: CV; a summary of their dissertation project; an example of their work in progress (provisional chapter of the dissertation or a published article in any language). The deadline for applications is May 11th 2009. Students selected will be notified before May 25th 2009.
