The Philadelphia Area Center for History of Science (PACHS) offers short-term residential fellowships for conducting dissertation research in history of medicine, science and technology. These fellowships are intended for students who wish to use the collections of two or more institutions in the PACHS consortium.

THE CENTER
PACHS is a consortium of eleven cultural and educational institutions: the Academy of Natural Sciences, the American Philosophical Society, the Chemical Heritage Foundation, the College of Physicians of Philadelphia, the Franklin Institute, the Hagley Museum and Library, the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, the Library Company of Philadelphia, Princeton University, the University of Pennsylvania, and the Wagner Free Institute of Science.  These institutions hold rich and deep collections with millions of manuscript items, printed volumes and artifacts of interest to historians of technology, medicine and science. PACHS is located in Philadelphia with easy access to member institutions’ collections as well as to local and regional mass transit. Researchers can read more about consortium members’ collections and search online catalogs by following links at www.pachs.net.

BENEFITS
The fellowship stipend is $2,000 per month for students who reside more than 75 miles from Philadelphia or $1,000 per month for students who reside closer. Fellows will have offices at PACHS and are encouraged to participate in events at member institutions. PACHS will facilitate fellows’ access to collections.

EXPECTATIONS
Candidates must list in their applications the specific collections they wish to use. Fellows are expected to conduct research at all listed collections for one or two months continuously between October 15, 2007, and August 31, 2008. Toward the end of their residence, fellows will be asked to present an informal discussion of their work to an audience of local scholars and other PACHS fellows.

ELIGIBILITY
Fellowships are funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation and are available to Ph.D. candidates who are U.S. nationals or who are students at U.S. institutions. Candidates who will use collections at multiple PACHS institutions will receive strong preference. Candidates who live 75 or more miles from Philadelphia will receive some preference. PACHS fellowships may be held sequentially with fellowships offered separately by PACHS member institutions but may not be held concurrently.

APPLICATION
Applicants are strongly encouraged to make inquiries to PACHS member institutions before applying, to determine relevance of holdings to their projects. Applications must be received by September 27, 2007, and must include:

  1. a Curriculum Vitae;
  2. a project proposal, limited to 1500 words, describing the research project, how it will advance historical scholarship, and the relevance of specific  PACHS members’ collections to the project; and
  3. two letters of support sent by recognized scholars directly to PACHS.

A panel of independent distinguished scholars will evaluate proposals based on their potential scholarly impact and their relevance to collections of PACHS member institutions. Email submission of application materials in PDF, RTF or MSWord format is strongly encouraged.

Applications and letters of support may be emailed to fellowships@pachs.net. Paper submissions are also welcome and may be mailed to
